There is one place in the world where a beautiful beach and a Mayan city come together: Tulum. The ancient Mayan city of Tulum is located in the Mexican province of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula. The city is on the Caribbean Sea and is part of Riviera Maya. This is well-known to tourists, as Cancun and Playa del Carmen are in this region. But why should you visit Tulum? The ancient Mayan city of Tulum has more to offer than just a beautiful beach with a Mayan temple!
Why should you visit Tulum?
Why should you visit Tulum? For the old Mayan city!
This ancient Mayan town is on a twelve meter high rock. On this rock there are various temples and other structures such as a lighthouse. This city is completely walled. The name of the city is named after that fact: Tulum means ‘Wall’. The ancient Mayan city of Tulum is the most photogenic place in Mexico, but it’s even more beautiful in real life!
This ancient Mayan town is the only Maya city that lays by the sea and here all land and sea routes came together. The temples are very well preserved despite the sea climate. This is probably because Tulum was inhabited as one of the last Mayan cities and was only abandoned around 1500.
Why should you visit Tulum? For the pretty beaches!
Tulum doesn’t have big sand beaches, but there is a beautiful sand beach near the famous ruins of Tulum. Super beautiful white sand and not crowded at all. Most of the resorts on the beaches of Tulum have a private beach, which means that there are only a few tourists on the “public” beach.
More reasons why you should visit Tulum
The old town of Tulum, Tulum Pueblo, has about 10,000 inhabitants. Tulum is a lively village with cozy salsa bars, live music and restaurants. In the old town everything is also a lot cheaper than at the beach. So, if you are looking for cheap accommodation, or if you want to have a good meal, then this is the place to be. You can reach the beach in 10 minutes by bus.
La Zebra is recommended for anyone who loves salsa dancing! It is an expensive hotel, but in the evenings they regularly have salsa nights, where they literal dance on the beach. It is fun for beginners and advanced dancers!
In addition, you can visit several cenotes (caves) and dive and/or snorkel in here. Just outside the center of Tulum are the Cenotes Des Ojos. The cenotes were a sacred sacrificing spot to the Mayans and are a freshwater source. Nowadays you can cave dive or snorkel there. This is a very special experience!
How to get there?
Excursion: Excursions are organized daily from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. These excursions always take a guided tour of the ancient Mayan city. Often these excursions are combined with a visit to Xel Ha, a type of park where you can snorkel.
Self-catering: Tulum is easily accessible by a local bus. From Cancun you can take a bus directly to Tulum. From Chetumal (for example, coming from Caye Caulker in Belize) you can also take the bus directly to Tulum.
