Which of the Gili islands should you go to?

which of the Gili islands, Which of the Gili islands should you go to?

The Gili islands are three amazing bounty islands off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia. These islands are 35 km from the popular island of Bali and therefore ideally combined with your stay on Bali. You can choose from three different Gili islands: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. Each island has its own charm and character and all three of them are mini paradises with beautiful clear blue water. There is no motorized transport on the Gili islands, just bikes and horse and carriage. This isn’t a problem because these islands are small enough to explore like that. But which of the Gili Islands should you go to?

In this blog I put the difference between the three islands so you know which of the Gili islands to choose!

Which of the 3 Gili Islands should you visit?

Gili Trawangan

This is the most popular as well as the largest of the three islands and has the nickname Gili T and party island. If you like a party then this is the perfect island for you. There is a huge amount of bars and restaurants on Gili T. This island is famous for its mushroom drinks. Police are almost never present and these mushroom shakes are allowed here. Be careful, because you never know exactly what the quality of these drinks is.

The island is not super big, 3km long and 2km wide and in a few hours you can walk around the whole island. Diving and snorkeling is great to do from this island, as there are many turtles swimming around there. In the evening it is wonderful to watch the sunset from the south side of the island. Here the sun sets into the sea every evening and there are some relaxed beach bars to enjoy this wonder of nature while having a nice drink.

Gili Air

Gili Air is my favorite island of the Gili’s. The accommodations are almost all lovely and slightly more luxurious bungalows are right on the beach. The island can be circled by foot in about an hour and a half. This is about five kilometers. It’s an island where it’s not too busy and not too quiet. You can relax here and have a bit of a hustle and bustle or a small party or find a cozy restaurant.

Rent a bike and explore the island by bike and prepare to be amazed by the beautiful beaches that the island posseses. Diving and snorkeling is great here and for about Rp. 100.000 you can arrange a snorkel trip. Or rent a diving goggle and snorkel and walk into the sea and snorkel around. The best place for the sunset is the west of the island, this is also the most peaceful place to stay and the beaches here are the most beautiful.

Gili Meno

This is the smallest and quietest island of the Gili’s. It is the island for the honeymooners and the people seeking peace and quiet. It is super quiet, there are but a few tourists and the beaches are super white and soft and almost always completely abandoned. Diving and/or snorkelling is also perfect here, given the amazing underwater world around all three of the Gili islands.

After the sunset at six o’clock in the evening there is almost nothing left to do on Gili Meno. All resorts are located on the east side of the island so they are out of the wind. On this island there is a turtle reserve, which is a nice variety in addition to sunbathing, snorkeling, diving and relaxing.

Diving and snorkeling on the Gili islands

All three of them are perfect diving and snorkel destinations because the underwater world is beautiful with the coral reefs which are present there and the great diversity of underwater animals such as turtles. The visibility underwater is more than 20 meters and the water temperature is great around 26 ° C. On all three islands there are many diving schools and you can arrange various snorkeling trips or simply rent a pair of diving goggles and snorkels.Diving and snorkeling on the Gili islands.

How to get to the Gili islands?

From Lombok: The only way you reach the Gili islands is by boat. From Senggigi, boats depart daily to the Gili’s. A boat ticket costs about Rp. 150.000 and the boat trip takes two hours. From the Gili’s there are several boats to Lombok daily and you can book through the ports on the islands.

From Bali: There are several boat companies sailing from Bali to the Gili’s and from various places in Bali you can arrange this. In the morning at 9 o’clock most boats leave from the port in Padangbai. An individual trip costs about Rp. 300.000 and the boat takes about two hours. You can also sail from Sanur to the Gili’s, but this boat usually stops at Padangbai.
