Do you want to know what to do in Kuala Lumpur? My 12 tips

The city of Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of the beautiful and interesting country of Malaysia and is located in the west of the western peninsula. Many people who go on holiday to Malaysia start or end their journey with a few days in Kuala Lumpur. This city has an international character and is located at the crossroads of various cultures. This is reflected in the street scene! The inhabitants of Kuala Lumpur form a beautiful mix of different cultures. You can also see the diverse cultures present in a fine mix of religious buildings and a huge variety of eateries. Kuala Lumpur is certainly a beautiful fusion of traditional norms and values, but also a modern city. Kuala Lumpur does not have a long history, because the city has not even existed for two hundred years. A settlement was once established on the spot where the rivers Klang and Gombak came together. Because these two rivers were quite muddy, the name Kuala Lumpur was chosen. This literally means “muddy confluence of rivers”.

What to do in Kuala Lumpur? My 12 tips!

1. Admire the Petronas Twin Towers

The Petronas Twin Towers was the tallest building in the world until 2003, but they are no longer that. The Taipei 101 in Taiwan is currently the tallest building in the world. But with a height of 452 meters they are still very impressive! The two towers are connected by a walkway and they are located in the middle of a neighborhood full of other tall buildings within walking distance of the city center. You can choose to visit the towers and enjoy a great view from a height! But you must arrange an admission ticket on time and this will cost you around € 20. You can do this online via the website of the Petronas Towers or get a ticket on the spot.

I didn’t go up myself, but I watched the towers from the KLCC park. Also don’t forget to view the towers in the evening, because they are very nicely lit! At the foot of the towers is a six-storey shopping center: Suria KLCC. Here you will also find the Kuala Lumpur aquarium. Location: Kuala Lumpur City Center.

2. Walk and shop in Chinatown

One of the coolest places to shop in Kuala Lumpur is Chinatown. The neighborhood starts because there is a big arch on the street and you immediately know that you are in Chinatown! In the evening, this neighborhood revives completely because a large market is being built with hundreds of stalls. You can really buy everything here: souvenirs, clothing, bags, sunglasses, shoes, etc. Often it is of course fake products and haggling on the price is definitely recommended! But also the many food stalls on the street make it very nice to visit this neighborhood. There are also various bars and shops. Location: Petaling Street.

3. Explore Bukit Bintang

This is the area in Kuala Lumpur where you can do most, very lively both during the day and in the evening. It is the neighborhood that I liked the most and where I spent a lot of time. The neighborhood is super central and from here you can explore the city on foot or catch the monorail. Bukit Bintang is the beating and tourist heart of Kuala Lumpur! It is the area with the most shopping malls and you can also find the popular Jalan Alor eating street here. Jalan Alor is popular with tourists and locals, which is why it is always very busy here. You will find street food here in all tastes! You can also find various massage salons here, where you can get a wonderful massage for little money.

4. Shopping in mega shopping malls

Kuala Lumpur has been named the best shopping city in all of Asia. And I can only agree with this! This is because there are a lot of very large shopping malls where you can shop endlessly. These shopping malls are open from early in the morning until late in the evening and 7 days a week. My favorite shopping malls are: Pavilion, the Mid Valley Megamall and Low Yat Plaza. These are shopping malls where you can find stores of the famous brands. There are also special shopping malls for electronic products such as telephones and cameras and the Chinese shopping mall is also recommended to visit!

5. View the Thean Hou Temple

The Thean Hou Temple is a very large Chinese temple complex in the city. This complex consists of six floors and is thousands of square meters in size. The temple is beautiful and typically Chinese with lots of details, colors and dragons. The garden around the Thean Hou temple is also highly recommended. You can visit the temple all day, but in the evening the temple is beautifully lit. Location: 65 Persiaran Endah, Taman Persiaran Desa.

6. Visit a Sky bar

There are a huge number of tall buildings in Kuala Lumpur with sky bars. In the Bukit Bintang district in particular, various sky bars can be found. These are clubs and restaurants on top of one of those tall buildings. From every sky bar you have a great view of the city and the Petronas Towers. I went to the Heli Lounge Bar myself and this is an absolute must. During the day this is a helicopter platform, but in the evening it turns into a large roof terrace. This terrace is open from 6 pm and you can go upstairs. You are expected to buy a drink. A gin and tonic costs around 5 euros, so the prices are not too bad! From 9pm it becomes busier and there is a dress code and there is a chance that you will have to wait in line. Location: Heli Lounge Bar, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Menara building.

7. Climb the stairs at the Batu Caves

The Batu Caves are a half-hour drive from the center of Kuala Lumpur. You can easily get here independently by metro or bus. Or take a taxi! This Hindu temple is located at the top of a staircase with countless steps. You will eventually arrive at a number of limestone caves and a meter-high gold-colored statue. The stairs are beautifully painted in all sorts of cheerful colors, but there are also many monkeys and these are sometimes annoying. It is usually quite busy here with tourists and therefore it is advisable to go early in the morning. The Batu Caves are open from 6 a.m.

8. Admire the Jamek Mosque

The Jamek Mosque is the oldest mosque in Kuala Lumpur and you cannot skip this mosque when you are in Kuala Lumpur. The architecture of the mosque is super cool! This mosque was built around 1900 and opened in 1910 by the sultan of Selangor. The design of the building is inspired by the architecture from the north of India. The mosque is on the water and surrounded by palm trees, making the building an oasis of tranquility. Admire the white domes, the 27-meter-high minarets and the impressive colonnade! Make sure your clothing is appropriate by covering your arms and legs and women must wear a headscarf. You can borrow suitable clothing at the entrance.

9. Walk in the KLCC park

The KLCC park is close to the Petronas Towers and forms the green heart of Kuala Lumpur. The park is large, clean and green with various ponds, fountains, benches, a swimming pool, a playground and a jogging path. In the evening there is a beautiful light show with fountains in this park. From the park you can take beautiful pictures of the Petronas Twin Towers.

10. Go on the roller coaster at Berjaya Times Square

Shopping mall Berjaya Times Square is a super large shopping mall of 7.5 million square meters and here are more than 1,000 stores, many cinemas and also many restaurants. On the fifth floor of this shopping mall is a real amusement park and you can ride a real roller coaster through the mall. Bizarre, a roller coaster in the mall, I’ve never seen that before!

11. Take a Fireflies tour

Selangor is a small village near Kuala Lumpur and thousands of fireflies live in the river of this village. From Kuala Lumpur you can book a tour and watch the fireflies in the evening. There is little to do in the village and therefore it is great to visit the fireflies through a tour from Kuala Lumpur.

12. Eat the delicious satay

According to satay lovers, the Malaysian satay is the tastiest in the world. The chicken or beef is tasty and the peanut sauce is so delicious. This satay sauce is quite thick, slightly spicy and slightly sweet. Satay is officially served in Kuala Lumpur (and in Malaysia) with cucumber, red onion and rice pads (nasi himpit). It doesn’t really matter where you will eat the satay in Kuala Lumpur, because even the simple food stalls on the street offer delicious satay for little money. The food on the street at the food stalls is reasonably safe due to the strict hygiene standards in Malaysia.

Food and drink in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia is located at a junction of different Asian cultures and this makes the Malaysian cuisine delicious! Eating is an important part of life in Kuala Lumpur, because in this city food is always and everywhere. In Kuala Lumpur you often eat dishes that are typical of a country, such as Chinese dim sum, Indian tandoori chicken and Indonesian rendang daging. The dish that you see everywhere is nasi lemak and this is rice cooked in coconut milk and served with anchovy, egg, squid, cucumber and sambal.
