Slovenia is still a relatively unknown holiday destination. Frankly, I could not even pinpoint the country on the map of Europe. It is one of the smallest countries in Europe and less than 2 million people live there. Slovenia is located in central Europe and borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. This country has a rich history, beautiful green nature, fairy-tale villages and castles, crystal clear lakes (such as Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj), vibrant rivers and beautiful small coastal towns. What are tips for a visit to Slovenia?
Tips for a visit to Slovenia! Why is this country so much fun?
Slovenia offers everything on a small surface
This country borders Croatia, Austria, Italy and Hungary. The coastline of Slovenia is 47 km and Slovenia has only two major cities: the capital Ljubljana (278,000 inhabitants) and Maribor (115,000 inhabitants). The landscape of Slovenia is very varied. In the north (near the border with Austria) you will find the Alps, in the west there are rivers and the Adriatic coast. And in the middle west there are vast vineyards. Slovenia is a very small country and so you can see many different places of the country in a few days! So one of the best tips for your visit to Slovenia is to enjoy the different scenerys!
Julian Alps are in Italy, but also partly in Slovenia. The highest mountain is the “Triglav” with 2864 meters. The population lives in this region of agriculture and since a few years also of tourism. There are a number of ski areas in Slovenia, with approximately 25 km of slopes per area. The national sport of Slovenia is biathlon and this is a combination of cross-country skiing and shooting. In the summer months you can go up with the ski lift, for example the Vogel ski lift, and enjoy a wonderful walk on the mountains and enjoy the endless landscape.
The outdoor activities
There are several beautiful rivers in Slovenia for fishing, canoeing and rafting. Slovenian green landscape is stretched out and you can walk and cycle endlessly. You will see many tourists who discover Slovenia by bike! There are also various mtb trails and downhill tracks. Because the country has not yet been massively discovered by the tourists, nature is still unspoilt and unexplored in many places. The farther you are from the paved roads, the quieter it becomes and the more you enjoy the beautiful nature.
Slovenia has 8,000 caves, of which about twenty can be visited. But every year new caves are discovered. For the largest cave complex you have to go to Postojna, because there are no less than 24 kilometers of underground caves. These are also the most visited caves in the world! It is very special and impressive to drive a train through these caves!
The Slovenian coast
With only 47 km of coastline, the possibility for a beach holiday in Slovenia is limited. There are only a few towns on the coast, but they are authentic and charming. You can enjoy the sea and the Mediterranean climate here. There are no endless sandy beaches to be found, but small rocky beaches. Especially the harbor town of Piran is very nice to visit!
The fairytale environment
There are several places where it looks like you are in a fairy-tale environment. The small villages, the vast landscapes, the churches, the peace, the mountains. It all creates a special atmosphere. Especially the lake of Bled is fantastic. You are really in a fairy tale here!
The capital Ljubljana
The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana and this city has a cozy and romantic atmosphere. This city consists of nice streets with cute houses. The city breathes both a Central Europe and a Mediterranean atmosphere and is rich in history, tradition, style, art and culture. There is a beautiful mixture of baroque, art nouveau and later architecture. One of the best tips for your visit to Slovenia is to visit Ljubljana for one or two days!
Slovenia has had a lively wine culture for more than two thousand years! So one of the best tips for a visit to Slovenia is to visit a bodega! According to the enthusiasts, Slovenia produces one of the best wines in the world. Slovenia has a perfect climate, the soil is very suitable for wine production and there are enough hills. Visit a vineyard and enjoy the delicious wine! Or drive through the extensive vineyards and enjoy the beautiful view.
There are several well-kept castles in Slovenia, but the most beautiful castle is the castle of Predjama. This castle is 700 years old and is built on a 123 meter high cliff. It is a spectacular sight! This castle is in the Guinness Book of World records as it is the largest rock castle in the world. This castle is a half hour drive from Ljubljana.
Prices in Slovenia
I expected Slovenia to be a very cheap country, but that is a bit disappointing. The Slovenian population earns an average of 1,000 euros net per month, but the prices in the supermarket are comparable to the prices in the Netherlands. The prices in restaurants or on a terrace are slightly lower than in the Netherlands, especially if you are in the less touristy places.
Tips for a visit to Slovenia: rent a car
As I wrote, Slovenia has a wide variety of landscapes within a short distance. That’s why it’s nice to make a round trip! Great places are all pretty close together and with a car you can easily do several things in a day. The nice places in the country are a bit difficult to visit with public transport, as they are often in the middle of nature. Slovenian motorways are safe and well maintained.
