The War Remnants Museum is one of the many war museums in Saigon / Ho Chi Minh. Outside the museum you will see aircrafts and tanks lined up. The museum itself is large and well ordered, and is divided into different topics. Much information here is in English and contains facts and pictures about the Vietnam War that are not known to most people.
A visit to the War Remnants Museum is more than worth your while.
Agent Orange
The consequences of Agent Orange are made clear in an intense way. This poisonous substance was used by the Americans during the war in order to deforest areas. Agent Orange causes – among others – the following illnesses: Hodgkin’s disease, various types of respiratory tract cancer, prostate cancer, and dysfunctions of the nervous system.
Due to the use of Agent Orange, thousands of kids with spina bifida and other deformities of the spine are born in Vietnam. Walls full of pictures of deformed children and adults are hanging in the museum. For some of the pictures, you must, however, really have a strong stomach.
It is confrontational and intense to see, but it is also a side of the war that Vietnam still has to face on a daily basis. A side that is kept hidden from the outside world.
Cluster bombs
The consequences of cluster bombs and landmines are also made clear with pictures. This way, you can see in the picture below that – for example – between 1975 and 2002 42,135 people were killed by bombs or explosives.
Opening times and admission fee
The museum is open all days of the week from 7:30 to 12:00 and from 13:30 to 17:00. Admission fee is 15,000 Dong (€0.65). The address of the War Remnants Museum is 28 Võ Văn Tần, phường 6 (district 3).
