Lake Bled is one of the biggest attractions in Slovenia! For me it was the reason that I wanted to travel to Slovenia. I saw great pictures of this fairytale lake on Instagram and I was immediately convinced. Lake Bled is one of the most photogenic places I have ever seen. This special place should not be missed if you go to Slovenia! This blog contains all the information you need for a visit to this fairytale lake. What are the best things to do at Lake Bled?
The best things to do at the fairytale lake of Bled!
Lake Bled is located in a green and hilly area near the Triglav National Park. The lake is breathtakingly beautiful and is 2.1 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide. In the picturesque lake there is an island in the middle with a beautiful church. Nice to know is that this island became a place of pilgrimage for Catholics after conversion to Christianity. It is still a popular pilgrimage site where the Virgin Mary honors.
This island makes it more special, but also the traditional rowing boats that sail on the crystal clear and blue lake provide a beautiful sight. There is also an imposing castle on one of the hills along the lake. You can also swim in the lake in a number of places. The village of Bled itself is small, but very touristy with several shops and restaurants.
The 6 best things to do at Lake Bled!
1. The most beautiful viewpoint of Lake Bled
The best thing to do at Lake Bled is visiting the viewpoint! This lake is the most breathtaking if you look at it from above. The picture at the top of this article is made from the viewpoint Ojstrica. This viewpoint is a must and must not be missed during your visit to Lake Bled!
In Bled you follow the signs to “Camping Bled” (the only camping on the lake) and then you will see a parking lot immediately next to the campsite where you can park your car for € 5.
Very close to the parking lot you can see a hidden access in the woods with a narrow path up. That is the starting point of the route you have to follow to get to the viewpoint. Because I could find the path difficult, I added the picture below of the entrance! If you stand with your back to the campsite and the parking lot, it is on the right.
After about 20 minutes walk through this sometimes very steep forest path you reach “Ojstrica”. It is advisable to wear good shoes, since the pad is stylish and also very slippery when it rains. The view makes the sometimes tiring climb up well worth it!
In peace I spent a while sitting on a rock and enjoyed a beautiful and panoramic view of the lake. This was a moment of pure happiness for me and where I just got quiet because of the beauty of the view! If you have not had enough of it then about 20 minutes away is the viewpoint “Mala Osojnica”, but I have not walked here myself, since I thought “Ojstrica” was beautiful enough!
2. Walking / cycling along the lake
To get a good idea of the impressive beauty of the lake and its surroundings, it is very nice to walk or cycle along the lake (a bit). Walking or cycling around the lake is one of the best things to do at Lake Bled! There is a walking and cycling path around the entire lake of about 6 km in total. During the walking or cycling tour you will pass several places where you can enter the clear water for a refreshing dive. You also come through the village of Bled and you see several boat rental and Camping Bled. It surprised me how the view is slightly different every time, but just breathtakingly beautiful from every side.
3. Visit the island
Various pletnas (traditional Slovenian rowing boats) sail to the island. You recognize these wooden boats from afar by the colorful canopy and the standing rower. So you can see the island and visit the church. For 4 euros you can ring 3x in the church and at that moment you can make a wish. After half an hour the pletna will return. The price for a gondola ride is around 12 euros. You can also rent a rowing boat yourself and sail across the lake to the island.
4. Castle of Bled
Be sure to visit the Castle of Bled, located on the east side of the lake on top of the rock. The castle of Bled is the oldest castle in Slovenia. From here you have a beautiful view of the lake and the surroundings. The castle now houses a museum and a restaurant. From the terrace you have a beautiful view of the lake.
5. Vintgar Gorge
This is not one of the best things to do at Lake Bled, but it’s close by Lake Bled. At 4 km from Bled is the Vintgar Gorge and this is an impressive natural phenomenon. It is a gorge through which the river Radovna flows and in the end is a nice waterfall. The entrance fee is 4 euros and you walk through wooden bridges along steep rocks. This walk is about 1.5 kilometers and is beautiful. The water has a beautiful blue-green color! Here, too, good shoes are recommended. You can easily get there by car, but it is also easy to do on foot or by bike.
6. Lake Bohinj
About half an hour’s drive from Bled is the beautiful Lake Bohinj. Here you can also walk, cycle, rent a boat or swim in the beautiful lake. Do not forget to visit the Savica waterfall, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the Triglav National Park.
How do you get to Lake Bled?
From the capital Ljubljana it is about a half hour drive to Lake Bled. The signs also clearly indicate it, so it is not to be missed. The main road runs along the entire lake and you can find a paid parking space. We have parked next to Camping Bled and the costs were 5 euros for a whole day. In high season it is very crowded with tourists and parking is sometimes difficult to find!
These are my favorite things to do at Lake Bled! What are your favorite things to do at Lake Bled?
There are several accommodations in Bled, from campsites to expensive hotels. Since Bled is a very tourist destination, I recommend to book your accommodation in time. I slept in Astoria Superior myself and we had a wonderful big room with a balcony overlooking the lake of Bled. The breakfast buffet is very extensive!
