Paje beach, Zanzibar

Paje is located on the east coast of the beautiful island of Zanzibar. The village of Paje is actually a large, long strip of white sand surrounded by a small village. On one side lies the village and on the other side the beach, accommodations, shops and eateries. There is an enormous tidal difference and often there is a good wind, which makes Paje on its way to becoming a small mecca for water sports. There is a supermarket in Paje and recently also an ATM. Please note that this ATM machine is regularly empty. Handy to take cash with you. Dollars in not too large denominations are the best, because they often get change back in the local currency.

Paje is a bit touristy, but most of all it is very quiet and peaceful. A lovely place to spend your holidays!

How to get to Paje?

The first step to reach Paje is to get to the island of Zanzibar. This can be done by taking a flight and landing at the airport on Zanzibar. This is possible from various African and European destinations. Another option is to fly to Dar Es Salaam and from there take the ferry to the capital Stone Town on Zanzibar.

  • Flying from Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar costs about € 60,- for a one way trip. There are several airlines that operate this flight several times a day.
  • The flight takes about 20 minutes.
  • The ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar costs 35 dollars for a one-way trip. It is recommended to book this ferry a few days in advance online.
  • This boat trip takes about an hour and a half. However, you have to be at the harbour an hour in advance.
  • From the harbor or the airport in Stone Town you can take a taxi for about 40 dollars. This is a ride of just over an hour.

10x nice things to do in Paje, Zanzibar

1. Kitesurfing

As I said before, Paje is known for his excellent kite surfing skills. In recent years Paje has become a small kitesurfing mecca! You can see this in the many kitesurfers on the beaches and the number of kitesurf schools in Paje. The conditions for learning to kitesurf in Paje are ideal, because there are no waves and there is often enough wind. The ideal place to take a trial lesson or to further develop your kitesurfing skills. Kitesurfing can not be missing from this list of fun things to do in Paje. One hour of private lessons kitesurfing costs about €70, -, but there are also semi private lessons or group lessons. Lessons can be arranged on the spot by visiting one of the kitesurfing schools.

2. Diving and snorkeling at the Blue Lagoon

The clear, warm water near Paje is a paradise for divers. During my dive I saw turtles, starfish, trumpet fish, an octopus and a lot of other colourful sea creatures. Wonderful! I also went snorkeling at the Blue Lagoon. This is a fifteen minute drive from Paje. This place is one of the most beautiful places to snorkel and there are excursions from all over Zanzibar. Also from Paje you can arrange an excursion to go snorkeling at this impressive place. But you can also easily take a taxi to the Blue Lagoon and rent a boat with a sailor and snorkeling equipment. That will save you a lot of money!

3. Visiting the village of Jambiani

Jambiani is a fishing village 5km from Paje. Jambiani is the name for a collection of several fishing villages that are more or less adjacent to each other. Jamiani has a kind of unpaved main road and around it the local people live. On the side of the sea you see every now and then a hotel, restaurant or shop. Local life takes place right in front of your eyes. Life here is still authentic. Fishermen are active, women look for seaweed, children play on the beach and local people have a chat with each other. Snorkeling in Jambiani is great! You can walk and go with your snorkel into the sea. Always take a good look at the times of ebb and flow. We were in Jambiani at low tide and snorkeling was not really an option, as the sea retreats up to one kilometer. We did have a lovely walk on the beautiful beach and through the village.

4. Rent a bike

Paje is a somewhat sprawling village and some hotels are a bit outside the center. That’s why it’s ideal to rent a bike and move around the village. Very practical to be able to see all of Paje, but also very nice to explore the surroundings. You can cycle to Jambiani, to the Blue Lagoon or to the Rock restaurant. The roads are pretty quiet with traffic, so that makes cycling safe. Remember that they ride on the other side of the road in Zanzibar. At low tide you can cycle on many places on the beach and that is always a nice experience. Costs for renting a bike are about €5,- per day.

5. The Rock Restaurant

The Rock is without a doubt one of the most spectacular restaurants in the world. The restaurant is located in the middle of a rock in the sea. At high tide it can only be reached by a boat that sails back and forth. It looks photogenic! The food is slightly more expensive compared to other places on the island, but still very affordable. On average you pay about 25 euros for a main course. This special restaurant is a 15-minute drive from Paje. It is advisable to book in advance for lunch or dinner. You can do this yourself via the website of The Rock and then you will see people working with two-hour shifts. On the menu you will find delicious fresh fish and the Rock Special is my favorite: a fish dish with grilled lobster, shrimp and white fish.

6. Kae Funk before sunset

In Paje the sun sets somewhere behind the trees, so you don’t have beautiful sunsets by the sea. Very unfortunate, but great sunsets can be admired on a half hour drive. Be sure to arrange a taxi to do this! For this you have to be on the east coast of the island near the village of Michanwi. Lovely to see the sun sinking into the sea from a cozy beach bar. The bar where I saw the sunset is Kae Funk. A very cozy beach bar with live music and delicious cocktails every night! Every day at the end of the afternoon it floods with people.

7. Supping in the mangrove

Do you like suppen and do you want to do this in a different place than in the sea with Paje? Then it’s nice to go supping in the mangrove. Less than half an hour’s drive away is a vast mangrove forest. Accompanied by a guide sup you through the narrow waters of the mangrove. This is a great experience and the guide tells you exactly what kind of animals you encounter and teaches you more about the mangrove. After an hour and a half of supping through the mangrove the tour ends with a little supping on the open sea. Costs for a three hour excursion are about €50,- per person. It depends on the ebb and flow of the tides at which time of the day this excursion can be arranged. We deliberately waited until the excursion was possible at the end of the afternoon so that we could supp at sunset. A special experience that I would not have wanted to miss! Even though you have never been sucked before you can do this excursion very well by the way.

8. Eating & Drinking in Paje

On the beach of Paje there are a number of restaurants where you can eat well. The prices are close together and on average you pay around 5 to 8 euros for a meal. My favorite spot is Kahawa and this café is open for breakfast and lunch. It is beautifully situated on the beach with lots of delicious beanbags to take your place. Very nice here are the hummous & falafel wrap, the smoothies. I also think they serve the best coffee of Zanzibar.

9. Walking in the sea at low tide

It is special to see that the difference between ebb and flow at the beach of Paje is so great. The beach is certainly hundreds of meters larger at low tide and this means that you can walk almost one kilometer into the sea. This is also something you see many locals doing to go fishing and get other things like seaweed from the sea. Always check with your accommodation at low tide so you won’t be surprised.

10. Barbecue parties

Every evening there is a barbecue party at a hotel or restaurant. You have to experience this one (or of course several times). The barbecue consists of fresh fish and various meat and other side dishes. Usually there is also a live band that plays cheerful African music and a nice number of people come to the party. The ideal place to enjoy the sultry summer evenings and meet nice people. Ask around a bit about which evening on which place to do it. I myself found the barbecue on Thursday evening at Demani Lodge very enjoyable.

This is my list with 10 nice things to do in Paje. Have you been to Paje and do you know more nice things to do in Paje? Let me know!

Tip hotel Paje

I slept 10 nights at Demani Lodge myself. This lodge consists of a number of cottages for 2, 3 or more persons. There is a nice swimming pool and a cozy bar. The restaurant serves delicious food for little money. We have eaten almost all evenings in the hotel, because it was just so tasty. Demani Lodge is 45 minutes walk on the beach to the center of Paje. But with a taxi you can get there in no time. They arrange excursions for you, they rent bikes and there is a pick up service from the ferry or airport. The staff is friendly and correct.

More tips for Paje!

  • Paje is a safe place, but you have to be careful when walking on the beach at night as a woman.
  • Bring enough sunburn with you. The sun is bright and sharp, because you are close to the equator. Sunburn is for sale in Paje, but it is quite expensive.
  • I also advise you to bring enough insect repellent. Malaria is a risk during your trip to Zanzibar and there are quite a few mosquitoes, especially after sunset.
  • On the beach of Paje there are regularly local men walking around who speak to you. In my experience they are all very friendly and harmless. They often want to sell you something, but saying no once is enough to be left alone afterwards.
  • The population on Zanzibar consists mainly of practicing Muslims and they dress conservatively. On the beach it is fine to wear your bikini or swimming trunks, but if you go into the village it is respectful to dress a little more.
  • In Paje you can see the local women collecting seaweed at low tide. This is used to make soap and it is sold locally. A good way to support the population sustainably is to buy this soap (wrapped in a banana leaf) in the local shops.
