As far as I’m concerned, the most beautiful square in the world is the Naqsh-e Jahan square in Isfahan, Iran. This square is also known under the name: The Imam square. If you are travelling there always be moments that you will remember forever and for me one of those moments when I first set foot on the immense square Naqsh-e Jahan square in Isfahan. Believe me, that square will surprise even the most seasoned traveler! Why?

The Naqsh-e Jahan square’s history
The original name of the square is Naqsh-e Jahan square and it means “design of the world”. This square was constructed by Shah Abbas in 1602. After the Iranian revolution, the square received its current name: The Imam square, which is a reference to ayatollah Khomeini. Despite that, many Iranians keep using the old name Naqsh-e Jahan for the square.
This is used to be the place where the Shah, people and merchants would meet each other. The square was the meeting point for people from all over the world, as Isfahan was an important stop on the Silk road. Polo used to be played on the square as well.
Facts about the Naqsh-e Jahan square in Isfahan
• The square was declared world heritage site by UNESCO in 1979.
• The square is 560 meters long and 160 meters wide.
• During its construction, the square was the largest in the world. Now, it is still the second biggest square in the world, after the Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
Why is this square so amazing?
This square is located in the center of the most beautiful city in all of Iran: Isfahan. ‘He, who has seen Isfahan, has already seen half of the entire world’, is an old Persian saying. This square is situated in one of the most beautiful and most interesting cities in the world and is one of the most iconic places in all of Iran.
The square is surrounded by a double gallery with shops, restaurants and on the north side you will find the entrance to the square. But what really makes this square stand out is the fact that there are several Islamic buildings next to the square.
The west side has the Ali Qapu Palace, the east side the Masjed-e Sheikh Lotfallah mosque and the south side the Masjed-e Jameh mosque. These three buildings combined make for a magnificent sight! You will find fountains in the middle of the large square. All this combined will make for an attractive and unique square where your eyes will keep wondering around.
When to visit the Nasq-e Jahan square in Isfahan?
The daytime is a great time to visit the square. It will be very busy with lots of different kinds of people around and it’s a lot of fun to start up a conversation with Iranians. As I mentioned earlier, Iranians are very hospitable and friendly! You can spend hours on end by just walking around on this square. The square is at its most beautiful during the evening. All buildings will be beautifully lighted and the fountains are on! A fairytale come to live!
