2. The Marshall islands: 5.000 tourists per year

Since 1986 the Marshall Islands have been an independent state in the Pacific Ocean and they are located east of Micronesia. This country consists of more than 1.000 islands! The Marshall Islands were previously notorious as the country where the Americans test the nuclear weapons. But now the country is best known for the beautiful coral reefs and the great options for (wreck) diving.

The inhabitants on these islands live largely from the sea and you will find the largest shark sanctuary in the world here. Climate changes threaten the islands, because if the sea continues to rise, the Marshall Islands will disappear over the course of time.

3. Kiribati: 5.300 tourists per year

Kiribati is an island nation in the middle of the Pacific and is about the farthest destination from Europe. The island of Hawaii is the closest at 2100 km. Kiribati consists of white sandy beaches and tropical jungles. Kiribati is remote and is quite inaccessible, but because of this the islands are still pure and unspoiled.

You can get there by flying from the Marshall Islands or from Fiji, but these flights only go once every two weeks. This island group is also only a few meters above sea level and threatened to disappear into the sea in the future due to climate change.

The people of Kiribati are friendly and hospitable. Special is the annual large crab migration. The crabs splash in the sea en masse to lay the eggs.
