The most beautiful island of the Galapagos: Isla Isabela

isla isabela Galapagos

The Galapagos are comprised of several islands, but Isla Isabela is the largest island of the Galapagos archipelago. It has been formed by six volcanoes that are responsible for a spectacular landscape with craters, lava tubes and beaches. The roads on the island are not paved and the largest village has only a couple of streets. There are a number of possibilities to spend the night in this village. Isla Isabela is a very nice and beautiful island that you must definitely see during a visit to the Galapagos.

What are the three best activities on Isla Isabela, Galapagos?

1. Las Tintoreras

Straight off the coast of Isabela lies this abandoned and very small volcanic island. It is really cool to visit! There is a constructed footpath crossing a lava field, teeming with iguanas. The island is named after the whitetip sharks, “tintoreras” in Spanish. These whitetip sharks can be found at low tide in a small cannal by the island. If you are lucky, you will also see penguins and turtles! All of them together in a small cannal!

In the waters in front of the island, you can snorkel wonderfully among the sharks and turtles. You must visit this place with a guide and you are allowed to only stay for a limited amount of time.

2. Centro de Crianza Arnaldo Tupiza

In this turtle center, you get a good explanation of the hows and whats of the Galapagos giant turtles. You can see them from egg to small turtles up to adult specimens. Some older turtles have been saved from a volcanic explosion and still have scars on their shells. It is a peaceful center where you can easily look at turtles, from very small to very large. You can even admire the eggs. You can walk here from the village by yourself in about 40 minutes.

3. Concha de Perla

A very beautiful and short route on the coast of the Pacific Ocean is the Concha de Perla. You will see various birds, sea lions and sea iguanas on the way and you will frequently come across sea lions on the path, which you must step over. Concha de Perla is a wonderful environment for snorkeling and the best thing is that you do not have to come here with a tour or a guide. If you go snorkeling, beware of the sea urchins on the seafloor. It is recommended to take sea shoes with you because the rocks can also give you bad cuts on your feet.
