Petra is one of the seven modern Wonders of the World and one of the most special places in the Middle East. The history -in combination with the fantastic landscape- really makes Petra the highlight of Jordan for me. It is a given that Petra has a place in the list of World Heritage sites and appears in one of the Indiana Jones movies.
Petra is the Roman name for the capital of the Nabataeans. The city lies in a gorge and is partly carved out of the boulders. Petra flourished as the junction of various trade routes, including the one for incense, which made the city very rich. What are great tips for a visit to Petra in Jordan?
I am giving you 5 tips for a visit to Petra in Jordan.
1. Reserve at least 2 days for it
Petra consists of a large area, with several possible routes. It is more than just the “Treasury” that we all know; this is only a small part of the whole Petra area. There is so much to see and do that it is a pity to walk around in a hurry. Several hiking trails lead you around the old city and there are various sights, such as the monastery (also carved out of boulders), crypts, an amphitheater, and many pillars.
2. The route: do the Madras Hike
This route is amazing and brings you to the most beautiful place in all of Petra! Since I saw pictures with a view of the treasury from above, this is the place where I want to go. It is a very cool spot and so special to be able to see the treasury from above. You can come here only with a guide. The tour itself is a moderate climb, surely possible to do for most people. There are a number of places where you can enter this route and therefore the hike lasts between 2 and 6 hours.
3. Bring your own lunch and drinks
As mentioned earlier, Petra is large and you can walk around endlessly and for days. Only on the main route is there food and drinks to buy. So take something with you in order to not have to do without!
4. Visit Petra by night
On the evenings of Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, there is ‘Petra by Night’. The monastery is illuminated with 1500 candles, which has a very beautiful effect. The tour lasts about an hour and leads to the Treasury of the Pharaoh, the eye-catcher of Petra, that has temporarily been turned into a theater for this evening.
5. Wear good shoes
Many paths are uneven and the subsoil is unpaved. In some places you must also climb. This, together with the long distances that you cross, makes it wise to wear good walking shoes.
