Kotor is a nice town, located on one of Montenegro’s most beautiful bays. The medieval architecture and the cultural heritage present have made Kotor listed on UNESCO’s list. Kotor is a great place to visit. Since Kotor is so small, it’s easy to see in just one day. What are great things to do in Kotor?
It is a fascinating old town and here are the three things you can do in Kotor!
Where is Kotor located?
Kotor is located on one of Montenegro’s most beautiful bays. This town is very special for various reasons. When you first see this plave, it makes a strong impression. The city is beautifully situated both from the sea and from the country. It is the only natural fjord of its kind in the whole world. The bay is on the list of most beautiful bays in the world. Kotor is about 2 hours drive from Dubrovnik (Croatia) and is therefore a popular destination for a day trip from Dubrovnik.
1. Walk to the top of the Fort
One of the best things to do in Kotor is the walk to the top of the fortress. From the old town, the hike begins. There are various signs in the city that indicate the starting point of the walk. At the starting point, you have to pay a few euros to walk the walk. The hiking trail has more than 1,000 steps, but the view from the top is worth it. At the top you will see the ancient ruins and have a great view. You can see the Kotor Bay, surrounded by the fjords, the old town and the many churches.
2. Explore the old city
The ancient city of Kotor is a typical example of the Middle Ages, built between the 12th and 14th centuries and well preserved against urbanization. This old town is considered to be the best preserved medieval walled city in the whole of the Mediterranean. The walls extend to 20 meters high, and believe it or not, they are over a thousand years old. One of the best things to do in Kotor is to wander in the maze of all the narrow streets and squares. The chaotic street plan was made with conscious effort to create confusion with the intruders who plundered the city. One of these squares contains the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (Sveti Tripun), a monument to Roman culture and one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. Just outside the gates of the city, there is a tourist office and you can get a free plan here for free.
3. Walk alongside the water
The coastline of the bay of Kotor is super beautiful. It is therefore very nice to walk along the waterfront. There are also a number of cafés and restaurants on this promenade. Sit down on a bench or in a cafe with a cup of coffee and watch the local fishermen in their boats. Kotor is also a city where many cruise ships stop. The sunset is best seen from the waterfront.
